Director

Sophie Rich Director

As a director, I have spearheaded numerous plays and musicals, in settings ranging from 7 high schoolers to 97 elementary and middle schoolers.

I push for work that is honest and imaginative, enjoying the intersection of teacher and director and integrating the collaborative aspects of creative drama into both the rehearsal and the educational processes. When I was once asked by an English teacher colleague to describe my directing philosophy in three words, my response was, “People are everything.” In my work, I wholeheartedly embrace the creative opportunities that come from an aesthetic of minimalism, which allows me to thrive in low-budget settings and to bring an innovative, out-of-the-box eye to telling stories, creatively repurposing people, objects, and set-pieces, and honoring the actor’s body and voice as our most fundamental and adaptable storytelling tools. Especially when working with students, I hope to empower their directorial eyes by incorporating their imaginative ideas and voices into the process whenever possible. I love to reimagine classics, surprise the audience with elements of whimsy, incorporate the ensemble into the storytelling wherever possible, and foster my young actors’ growth through each process.
